Binomial Theorem

Basic से Advanced तक Binomial Expansion, General Term, Middle Term, Coefficients, Greatest Term और Applications के Complete Exam-Oriented Notes

Chapter Introduction

(a+b)n = Σr=0n C(n,r) an-rbr

3️⃣ Basic Concepts

Binomial

x + y Binomial
a - b Binomial
2x + 3 Binomial

Expansion

(a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2

4️⃣ Important Definitions

Binomial

Expansion

Coefficient

Binomial Coefficient

General Term

Middle Term

5️⃣ Binomial Theorem — Complete Concept

Positive Integral Index का मुख्य Theorem

(a+b)n = C(n,0)an + C(n,1)an-1b + C(n,2)an-2b2 + ... + C(n,n)bn

Compact form:

(a+b)n = Σ C(n,r)an-rbr
  • n = non-negative integer
  • r = 0,1,2,...,n
  • C(n,r) = nCr

Expansion

(a-b)n = Σ C(n,r)an-r(-b)r

(a-b)n = an - nCan-1b + C(n,2)an-2b2 - ...

First Few Expansions

(a+b)2 = a² + 2ab + b²
(a+b)3 = a³ + 3a²b + 3ab² + b³
(a+b)4 = a⁴ + 4a³b + 6a²b² + 4ab³ + b⁴
(a+b)5 = a⁵ + 5a⁴b + 10a³b² + 10a²b³ + 5ab⁴ + b⁵

6️⃣ Binomial Coefficients

nCr = n! / [r!(n-r)!]
Important:
nC0 = nCn = 1
nCr = nC(n-r)

Pascal Triangle

1 1 1 1 2 1 1 3 3 1 1 4 6 4 1

Useful Relations

nCr = n!/[r!(n-r)!]
nCr = nC(n-r)
nCr + nC(r-1) = (n+1)Cr
r·nCr = n·(n-1)C(r-1)
(n-r)·nCr = n·(n-1)Cr

7️⃣ General Term

Tr+1 = C(n,r)an-rbr
Memory Trick:
Term number = r+1

(a + bx)n

तो:

Tr+1 = C(n,r)an-r(bx)r

Independent Term

Method:
  1. General term
  4. Valid integer r
  5. Term calculate करें।

8️⃣ Middle Terms

(a+b)n में कुल terms = n+1.

n Total Terms Middle Term
Even Odd एक middle term
Odd Even दो middle terms
यदि n even है:
Middle Term = T(n/2)+1
यदि n odd है:
Middle Terms = T(n+1)/2 और T(n+3)/2

9️⃣ Important Properties

Number of Terms

n + 1

Sum of Coefficients

2n

Alternating Coefficient Sum

0

First + Last Coefficient

1 + 1 = 2

Sum of All Binomial Coefficients

nC0 + nC1 + nC2 + ... + nCn = 2n

Alternating Sum

nC0 - nC1 + nC2 - ... + (-1)nnCn = 0

🔟 Applications of Binomial Theorem

Application 1 — Expansion

Application 2 — Specific Term

Application 3 — Coefficient

Application 4 — Independent Term

Application 5 — Middle Term

Application 6 — Approximation

Coefficient of xk

(a+bx)n

Coefficient of xk = C(n,k)an-kbk

Coefficient in Product of Two Expansions

⚡ Formula / Rules / Memory Tricks

General Term
Tr+1 = nCr an-rbr
Number of Terms
n+1
Symmetry
nCr = nC(n-r)
Coefficient Sum
2n
Term Number Trick:
Required term = k-th term → formula में r = k−1.
Power Trick:
Coefficient Trick:

📝 Solved Examples

🟢 BASIC

Example 1: Expand (x+2)3.

Solution:
(x+2)³ = x³ + 3x²(2) + 3x(2²) + 2³
= x³ + 6x² + 12x + 8
Answer: x³ + 6x² + 12x + 8
🟢 BASIC

Example 2: Find the 4th term of (x+2)6.

4th term के लिए r = 3.
T4 = 6C3 x3 2³
= 20 × 8x³ = 160x³
Answer: 160x³
🟡 MEDIUM

Example 3: Find the coefficient of x² in (2+x)5.

x² के लिए r = 2.
T3 = 5C2 (2)3x²
= 10 × 8x² = 80x²
Coefficient = 80
🟡 MEDIUM

Example 4: Find the middle term of (x+2)8.

n = 8, इसलिए कुल terms = 9. अतः एक middle term होगा।
Middle Term = T5
यहाँ r = 4.
T5 = 8C4 x⁴ 2⁴
= 70 × 16x⁴ = 1120x⁴
Answer: 1120x⁴
🟠 HARD

Example 5: Find the constant term in (x² + 1/x)6.

General term:
Tr+1 = 6Cr (x²)6-r(x-1)r
x की total power:
2(6-r) - r = 12 - 3r
Constant term के लिए power = 0:
12 - 3r = 0 ⇒ r = 4
T5 = 6C4
Answer: 15
🟠 HARD

Example 6: Find the coefficient of x³ in (2x + 1)7.

x³ के लिए r = 3.
T4 = 7C3(2x)3
= 35 × 8x³ = 280x³
Coefficient = 280
🔴 ADVANCED

Example 7: Find the coefficient of x5 in (1+x)10(1-x)6.

(1+x)10(1-x)6 = (1+x)4(1-x²)6
Possible combinations:
Coefficient = 4C3(−6C1) + 4C1(6C2)
= 4(−6) + 4(15) = −24 + 60 = 36
Answer: 36

🧠 Concept Based Questions

Concept 1 — Why does the power remain n?

(n-r)+r = n

Concept 2 — Why are coefficients symmetric?

nCr = nC(n-r)

Concept 3 — Statement Based

  1. (a+b)n में n+1 terms होते हैं।
  4. Consecutive coefficients

🔴 Advanced Level

1. Greatest Term — Basic Method

2. Approximation

3. General Coefficient Method

यदि expression:

(a+bx)n(c+dx)m

Advanced Strategy: k = i+j

4. Binomial Theorem + Identities

❌ (a−b)n में signs ignore करना

🚀 Exam Strategy

Fast Decision Tree:
Expansion → Theorem
Specific Term → General Term
Coefficient → Target Power
Constant → Power = 0
Middle → Total Terms
Product of Expansions → Power Combination
