UPSC NDA syllabus में Matrices and Determinants के अंतर्गत two या three unknowns वाले system of linear equations को Cramer's Rule और Matrix Method से solve करना स्पष्ट रूप से शामिल किया गया है।

3️⃣ Basic Concepts — Zero Level से

Linear Equation

Simultaneous Linear Equations

Coefficient

Coefficient Matrix

2x + 3y = 7
x - y = 1

A = [ 2   3 ]
    [ 1  -1 ]

Constant Matrix

B = [ 7 ]
   [ 1 ]

Variable Matrix

X = [ x ]
   [ y ]

Matrix Equation

AX = B

जहाँ A = coefficient matrix, X = variable matrix और B = constant matrix है।

4️⃣ Important Definitions

Determinant

Square Matrix

Coefficient Matrix

Augmented Matrix

Unique Solution

No Solution

Infinite Solutions

Singular Matrix

Square matrix जिसका determinant zero हो।

5️⃣ Complete Concepts

5.1 दो Variables वाली Equations

a₁x + b₁y = c₁
a₂x + b₂y = c₂

Equations

a₁x + b₁y + c₁z = d₁
a₂x + b₂y + c₂z = d₂
a₃x + b₃y + c₃z = d₃

5.3 Two-Variable Determinant

| a  b |
| c  d | = ad − bc

5.4 Three-Order Determinant

Δ = | a  b  c |
| d  e  f |
| g  h  i |

Δ = a(ei − fh) − b(di − fg) + c(dh − eg)

6️⃣ Important Facts / Rules

📌 Rule 1

📌 Rule 3

Matrix Method में यदि A inverse मौजूद है, तो X = A⁻¹B।

📌 Rule 4

A inverse के लिए square matrix और |A| ≠ 0 आवश्यक है।

Trap

Δ = 0 होने पर system के पास No Solution या Infinitely Many Solutions हो सकते हैं।

7️⃣ Cramer's Rule

7.1 दो Variables का General Form

a₁x + b₁y = c₁
a₂x + b₂y = c₂

Main determinant:

Δ = | a₁  b₁ |
| a₂  b₂ | = a₁b₂ − a₂b₁

x के लिए determinant:

Δₓ = | c₁  b₁ |
| c₂  b₂ | = c₁b₂ − c₂b₁

y के लिए determinant:

Δᵧ = | a₁  c₁ |
| a₂  c₂ | = a₁c₂ − a₂c₁

x = Δₓ / Δ
y = Δᵧ / Δ

💡 Cramer's Memory Trick

a₁x + b₁y + c₁z = d₁
a₂x + b₂y + c₂z = d₂
a₃x + b₃y + c₃z = d₃

Main determinant Δ coefficient matrix का determinant है।

x के लिए first column को constants column से replace करके Δₓ, y के लिए second column replace करके Δᵧ और z के लिए third column replace करके Δz मिलता है।

x = Δₓ/Δ    y = Δᵧ/Δ    z = Δz/Δ

8️⃣ Matrix Method

8.1 Standard Form

Equations

AX = B

Steps

  4. Equation को AX = B बनाएं।
  5. यदि |A| ≠ 0 है तो A inverse निकालें।
  7. Final result: X = A⁻¹B

8.3 Inverse Matrix Formula

A⁻¹ = adj(A) / |A|

8.4 Two × Two Matrix का Inverse

A = | a  b |
| c  d |
A⁻¹ = 1/(ad−bc) × | d  −b |
| −c  a |

9️⃣ Consistency of Linear Equations

a₁x + b₁y = c₁
a₂x + b₂y = c₂

मुख्य determinant:

Δ = a₁b₂ − a₂b₁
Δ ≠ 0 Unique solution
Δ = 0 तथा equations compatible Infinitely many solutions
Δ = 0 तथा equations incompatible No solution

Coefficient Ratio

a₁x+b₁y=c₁
a₂x+b₂y=c₂

a₁/a₂,   b₁/b₂,   c₁/c₂
  • यदि तीनों ratios समान हैं → coincident equations → infinitely many solutions.
  • यदि a और b के ratios समान लेकिन constant ratio अलग है → parallel/inconsistent → no solution.

📝 12️⃣ Solved Examples

🟢 BASIC

Example 1 — Cramer's Rule

Solve:

x + y = 5
x − y = 1
A) x=2, y=3
B) x=3, y=2
C) x=4, y=1
D) x=1, y=4
Correct Answer: B) x=3, y=2

Main determinant:

Δ = |1  1|
|1  −1| = −1−1 = −2

x के लिए:

Δₓ = |5  1|
|1  −1| = −5−1 = −6

x = (−6)/(−2) = 3

y के लिए:

Δᵧ = |1  5|
|1  1| = 1−5 = −4

y = (−4)/(−2) = 2

Concept Used: Cramer's Rule.
🟡 MEDIUM

Example 2 — Matrix Method

Solve:

2x + y = 5
x − y = 1

Matrix form:

[2  1] [x] = [5]
[1 −1] [y]   [1]

A = [2  1]
[1 −1]

|A| = 2(−1) − 1(1) = −3 ≠ 0

A⁻¹ = 1/(−3) [−1 −1]
[−1  2]

X = A⁻¹B करने पर:

x = 2
y = 1
Correct Answer: x = 2, y = 1
🟠 HARD

Example 3 — Three Variables

Solve:

x + y + z = 6
x + 2y + 3z = 14
2x + y + 2z = 9

6−y−z + 2y + 3z = 14
y + 2z = 8

2(6−y−z)+y+2z=9
12−y=9
y=3

y + 2z = 8 से: 3 + 2z = 8

z = 5/2

x = 6 − 3 − 5/2 = 1/2

Solution: x = 1/2, y = 3, z = 5/2
🔴 ADVANCED

Example 4 — Parameter और Unique Solution

ax + y = 1
x + ay = 1

Coefficient determinant:

Δ = |a  1|
|1  a| = a² − 1

Unique solution

a² − 1 ≠ 0
(a−1)(a+1) ≠ 0

a ≠ 1 और a ≠ −1
