Permutation & Combination
Restricted Arrangement
📋 Table of Contents
1. 📖 Chapter Overview
Order Does Not Matter → Selectionउदाहरण: A, B, C का चयन और C, B, A का चयन एक ही selection है।

3. 🧠 BASIC CONCEPTS
3.1 Factorial —
= 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120
3.2 Fundamental Principle of Counting
3.3 Permutation
3.4 Combination
4. 📚 IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS
Permutation
Combination
Distinct Objects
Repeated / Identical Objects
Circular Arrangement
Restricted Arrangement
5. 🔥 COMPLETE CONCEPTS
Linear Arrangement
Arrangement
5.3 Repeated Objects /
3!/2! = 3Arrangements: AAB, ABA, BAA
5.4 Repeated Objects में Restriction
5.5 Circular Arrangement
Clockwise/Anticlockwise
5.7 Circular Arrangement —
5.8 Circular Arrangement —
5.10 Restricted Arrangement — A और B साथ
5.11 Restricted Arrangement — A और B अलग-अलग
5.12 Vowels Together
5.13 Vowels Not Together
6. 📌 IMPORTANT RULES
- Order matters → Permutation.
- Order does not matter → Combination.
- Identical objects → factorial से divide करें।
- Circular arrangement → rotation को same मानने पर (n−1)!.
- Together → Block Method.
- Not together → Total − Together.
- At least one → अक्सर complement method सरल होता है।
- Exactly → condition को precisely count करें।
- Number formation → leading zero check करें।
- Repeated letters → repeated factorial से divide करें।
7. 🧮 FORMULA SECTION
| Concept | Formula | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Factorial | n!
| Permutation | ⁿPᵣ = n!/(n−r)! | Order important |
| Combination | ⁿCᵣ = n!/[r!(n−r)!] | Selection |
| Relation | ⁿPᵣ = ⁿCᵣr!
| Repeated objects | n!/(p!q!r!...) | Identical objects |
| Circular arrangement | (n−1)! | Distinct objects around a circle |
| Combination symmetry | ⁿCᵣ = ⁿCₙ₋ᵣ | Large r
8. ⚡ SHORTCUTS & TRICKS
Trick 1 — P या C पहचानें
“Arrange / seat / rank / form” → पहले Permutation सोचें। “Select / choose / committee / team” → पहले Combination सोचें।
Trick 2 — Together
Together = Block. पहले block को एक object मानें।
Trick 3 — Not Together
Trick 4 — Circular
Trick 5 — Repeated Objects
Trick 6 — Combination
9. 📝 SOLVED EXAMPLES
Example 1 — Basic Permutation
5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120
Example 2 — nPr
⁷P₃ = 7!/(7−3)! = 7!/4!
= 7 × 6 × 5 = 210
Example 3 — Repeated Objects
5!/(2!×2!) = 120/4 = 30
Example 4 — Circular Arrangement
(6−1)! = 5! = 120
Example 5 — Circular + Together
Units = 4.
Circular units = (4−1)! = 3! = 6
B-A = 2 ways.
6 × 2 = 12
Example 6 — Not Together
Total circular arrangements: (5−1)! = 24
A और B साथ: A-B block + बाकी 3 units → कुल 4 units
(4−1)! × 2! = 3! × 2 = 12
Not together = 24 − 12 = 12
Example 7 — Restricted Number
⁴P₃ = 4×3×2 = 24
Example 8 — Leading Zero Trap
4 × 4 × 3 × 2 = 96
Example 9 — Repeated Letters + Together
Units: AA, B, B, C = 4 units.
4!/2! = 12
10. 📝 PYQ MASTER SECTION
Verified Evidence — NDA
Source evidence: UPSC NDA examination syllabus and UPSC official previous-question-paper repository.
PYQ Pattern Evidence — NDA
PYQ Example — NDA Pattern
NDA के उपलब्ध previous-year compilations में circular arrangement, repeated-letter arrangement, restricted number formation, committee selection और word-arrangement जैसे प्रश्न मिलते हैं।
11. 📊 PYQ PATTERN ANALYSIS
|---|---|---|
| Basic P&C | nPr, nCr, identities | Formula + simplification |
| Word Arrangement | Letters arrange करना | Factorial / repeated factorial |
| Restricted Arrangement | Together / apart / fixed position | Block / Complement |
| Repeated Objects | Repeated letters/items | Divide by repetition factorials |
| Circular Arrangement | Round table / ring | (n−1)! |
| Number Formation | Digits, even/odd, divisibility, zero | Position-wise counting |
| Advanced | Multiple restrictions | Block + gap + complement + casework |
12. 🎯 PRACTICE QUESTIONS
⁸P₃ = 8×7×6 = 336
Total = 24; Together = 12; इसलिए Not Together = 12.
⁷C₃ = 7!/(3!4!) = 35
First digit = 4 choices;
13. 🧠 CONCEPT BASED QUESTIONS
Concept Q1
Concept Q2
Concept Q3
14. 🔴 ADVANCED LEVEL
14.1 Multiple Restrictions
- Zero/odd/even/fixed position conditions अलग handle करें.
14.2 Restricted Arrangement with Repeated Objects
14.3 Block Method + Internal Arrangement
14.4 Gap Method
Example:
“No two vowels together” जैसी condition में अलग-अलग gaps चुनने पड़ सकते हैं।
14.5 Complement Method
“At least one”, “not together”, “at least one restriction violated” जैसे प्रश्नों में total से unwanted cases घटाना कई बार सरल होता है।
14.6 Double Counting
15. ⚠️ COMMON MISTAKES
✅ Block × Internal Arrangement
❌ Number formation में 0 को first position देना
✅ Leading zero restriction पहले check करें।
16. 🎯 EXAM-WISE STRATEGY
UPSC NDA
Linear arrangement, repeated objects, circular arrangement, restricted arrangements, number formation और mixed P&C को practice करें।
SSC
Railway
Banking
Other Government Exams
State, Defence, Police, Teaching, PSU
